Society in the 1950s

My article was "The Interstate Highway System." This was mainly about how Eisenhower created the new freeway system for a military and civilian purpose. The new freeway system which was also known as the National System of Interstate and Defense Highways could be used to evacuate cities and to help get people out of the city faster in case of a missile attack. Eisenhower had 41,000 miles of four-lane roads built along with 16,000 entrance ramps and 55,000 bridges which wern't fully develooped until 1990's. The new freeway system caused Americans to be more satisfied about the roads because the could drive from any place to place much faster at high speeds without stoplights. The highway system today is still at use every single day and it is still very successful and an easy way to get around.

McCarthyism

A. Three things I found important within the telegram are that:
57 Communists were present in the state department.
Mr. Acheson failed to discharge those who were labeled as dangerous.
A state department spokesman denied that there were 57 Communists in the department and state that there were no Communists at all in the state department.

B. I think this document was written in order to protect the American citizens of the united states from danger that could come from Communists working in our state departments and I think Senator McCarthy was warning President Truman of his whereabouts and what could be a threat to the US.

C. Senator McCarthy states "I would suggest therefore, Mr. president, that you simply pick up your phone and ask Mr. Acheson how many of those whom your board labeled as dangerous he failed to discharge." This quote is evidence of why the document was written. McCarthy clearly wanted the president to become aware of what was going on and he wanted the president to see what Mr. Acheson was up to and to make sure that America was fully protected.

D. This document shows that in life in the U.S. at that time telegrams were still a popular way of communication and they were used more for secrecy and hiding things. Phones were also just starting to get popular for communication at this time in the U.S. back then and they were in the white house at that time. This document also shows that in the life back then, they probably did not have as advanced investigation organizations to do background searches on people as we do today. This could be the reason why they could not directly prove the number of communists that were in the state department or if there were any communists in the state department at all.

E. I would ask the author: Why didn't Senator McCarthy meet with the president in person and ask to have Mr. Acheson there in order to confront him? Is it possible that Mr. Acheson could be covering up and hiding information about the dangerous people in the state department because he was involved with communism as well?

Summarize Move/Solider Post

In Saving Private Ryan, you can basically summarize it by saying that men fought against many Germans and lost their lives trying to save one man who had orders to be sent home due to the deaths of his three brothers. It ended up that once they got to private Ryan, they already had many men dead just from the travels and struggles it took to get there. Private Ryan did not want to go home because of the fact that he did not want to abandon his men and he believed that every single one of his buddies deserved to go home with him. In conclusion, Private Ryan, his team, and the team sent to retrieve him ended up staying and fighting on the bridge against the Germans. In the end, the war was over and the captain and most of his team died, but Private Ryan and a few of the team made it back home safely.



A. The day in the life of a solider back then would be fighting against Germans and seeing your buddies be killed or injured. You would travel a lot by foot and you usually wouldn't make it throughout a few days of the war unless you were lucky or you had good skills. You would be fighting against more advanced equipment and more men than your own team. You would be scared and have a huge chance of getting injured and dying.

B. The character that I liked most within Saving Private Ryan, would have to be the sniper; Private Jackson. He was brave and very accurate in his sniping. When he went to snipe men, he would quote scriptures from the bible as he took the shot. I think this showed that he was a man of faith and that he trusted in God to help him get through the war and to help him get good accuracy. He was a fighter and always did what he was told by his Captain. Sadly, Jackson was blown up within the tower during the fight on the bridge.

C. In the war, I would have not been like the man who was afraid and just hid behind walls because he was scared. I would have been most like Private Jackson! I would have stood my ground and fought with dignity and with my faith. I would have killed as many Germans as I could have and I would have been by my buddies sides, having their back no matter what. Within the movie the man who was afraid to fight could have saved two of his men from a German that was fighting with them and wrestling them to kill them. I would have immediately gone up the stairs and shot this German instead of hiding like a little pandsy. I would have murdered this German and saved my two men from death. In the war, I would have just prayed that I made it through and hoped for the best. I would have been scared but If I didn't have a choice, I would just try to get through day to day alive, and try to do what was assigned to do best.

American Imperialism

This cartoon represents American Imperialism and directly shows how the United States benefited from Imperialism. Within the cartoon, you see that the 5 men on top, represent the United States and how we were living before we accepted imperialism. The 5 men on the bottom show the United States after we accepted Imperialism and it portrays how much better our country became because of Imperialism.

The United States became an Imperialistic country in the last part of the 1800's because of desire for more power and authority. Not only that, but the economy also played a big part in why the United States became an imperialistic country. During the late 1800's the U.S. became known as the the world's industrial producer. With America's economy in good shape and gaining so much benefits, the support of imperialism grew and the United States soon became an Imperialistic nation.

Labor Unions

Labor Unions, in the 19th Century were summed up as workers coming together to make a union in order to increase their power. In the 19th Century it was common for individual workers to lose power and lose their jobs because of how much the industry grew. Therefore, the workers would come together in order to create a power that was higher than their bosses and employees.

Within this cartoon, you see that there is a man on the right who's riding a horse and he is labeled as "Labor". This man represents a worker or workers who are fighting within a labor union to exert their power. Where as, the rider on the right represents the bosses, and the industry which keeps growing and taking all the power; making work and living hard for people living in poverty. 

Causes of WW1

This political cartoon represents an Alliance, which is one of the Causes of World War One. An Alliance is defined as a union or agreement between two or more countries stating that they will have each other's back and be on their side. Within this political cartoon, you see that Austria is threatening Serbia, therefore; Russia goes after Austria because Russia has an Alliance made with Serbia. There is an Alliance between Serbia, Russia, and France. And an Alliance between Austria, Germany, etc.

The United States had entered World War One because of The Sinking of the Lusitania, The Zimmerman Telegram, Economic ties to European power, and The Russian Revolution. These all were reasons why The United States joined the war.

I think that this picture from Reconstruction after the Civil War depicts how there was a struggle for labor and between the white and black men, there was major competition for jobs.
